first aircraft of the season
The first aircraft in almost 9 months: a ski-equipped Basler BT-67, a converted Douglas C-47 (DC-3)

October is the month when first aircraft arrives after almost 9 months. It is also the month when all of the winterovers finish up end of year tasks and start packing up for thier departure in mid-November.  The first aircraft to land at the Pole in over 8 months was a ski-equipped Basler BT-67, a converted Douglas C-47 (DC-3), that had flown from Canada to Chile and then through the British Rothera Station on the Antarcic peninsula.

Now that the sun is up we can appreciate the stark beauty of the high Antarctic plateau and feel the how isolated we have been for almost a year.

We are wrapping up highly successful observing year with South Pole Telescope. We made a few newpapers recently with our discovery of one of the largest galaxy clusters ever found at high redshift, meaning it is a very old cluster.
